What is a portal in FileMaker?

A portal in FileMaker is used to display records from a related table. The term portal is also used for a portal in German-speaking countries. A portal can be placed at any position within a FileMaker layout, with one restriction: portals cannot be placed within pop-up windows.

A portal can be set up to display any number of related records. The setup is done in the FileMaker Portal Setup dialog, which is displayed when you double-click on the portal.

Portal settings in FileMaker

The following settings can be made for the corresponding cutout in the cutout setting dialog:

  • Sort portal records (optional, sort order of records within the portal)
  • Show related records from (related table from which the related records are to be displayed)
  • Filter portal records (optional, criteria by which the records should be displayed within the portal. Attention: Filtering is done only by visibility. Filtering is not effective for script-controlled access to the portal)
  • Vertical scrollbar (optional, provides a vertical scrollbar in the portal to display more than the set number of records)
  • reset scrollbar on exit (resets the position of the scrollbar to the beginning after leaving the section)
  • beginning row (row from which the display of data from the related table should start)
  • number of lines (number of lines to be displayed in the portal)
  • use alternating line status (optional, colors the portal lines alternately in different colors, adjustable in the inspector)
  • Use active line status (optional, marks the currently active line in the portal)

When creating a portal, make sure that the related table actually matches the current reference. If the desired table does not match the table appearance of the current layout, no records are displayed in the portal.
