What is a custom function in FileMaker?

A Custom Function in FileMaker is a custom function, which is also called “custom function” in the German FileMaker version. Custom Functions a FileMaker database can be extended by any number of own additional functions. The call of a custom function is done in the formula editor just like any other FileMaker function. What is a database?

What is meant by digitization?

Digitization is generally used as a generic term for the conversion from analog (physical) to digital management of data of all kinds. Managing data with pen and paper offers the advantage of being able to easily store all stored data according to the desired scheme (calendar, address book or notepad). But the list of disadvantages is unfortunately long: The data is only available once where it was written down and cannot be used for other actions such as cover letters, e-mail or even for business and receipts at the push of a button. What is a drop-down list in FileMaker?

FileMaker Inspector: Data > Field For FileMaker databases, a drop-down list is a field formatting tool that can be used to open a pop-up menu with value specifications when the user selects the field. The value specifications can be taken from any value list. To add a drop-down list to a field, switch to Layout mode in FileMaker and click the desired field. In the Inspector (View > Inspector) you can now define all display preferences for the selected field in the area [Field] of the tab [Data]:

Control style (Form in which the field should be displayed. By default, a field is displayed as an edit field. Possible other options: drop-down list, drop-down menu, checkboxes, radio buttons, drop-down calendar)

Automatically populate via value list (automatically suggests matching entries from the value list as you type if the string of the first letters you type matches a value in the value list)

What are external data sources in FileMaker?

In FileMaker, an external data source is defined as a database that comes from external sources, such as another FileMaker file or an ODBC data source. Any number of external data sources can be defined for each FileMaker database, from which new tables can be added later in the Database Administration under [Relationships]. What is the FileMaker Cloud?

With the release of the FileMaker 15 platform, FileMaker launched the new “FileMaker Cloud” service in the USA and Canada. With FileMaker Cloud, it is possible to share FileMaker databases over the internet and access them from any location. The shared databases can be accessed with FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go via WebDirect with an internet browser. As technical basis for this service FileMaker uses Amazon Web Services (AWS). Since March 2017 FileMaker Cloud is also available in Germany using the Amazon data center in Frankfurt. (more…)

What is the .fmp12 format of FileMaker?

FileMaker Pro 12 was released in Spring 2012, replacing the old .fp7 format from FileMaker 7 through 11 with the new .fmp12 format. FileMaker Pro 12 includes a completely new layout engine that is now based on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). This technology makes it possible to change the entire design of a database with one command. To match this feature, FileMaker provides a total of 40 design themes, some of which are optimized for use with iOS. In .fmp12 format, the previous container fields are replaced by container fields, which now also support Drag & Drop. FileMaker Pro 12 also supports the query of FileMaker databases via SQL command. FileMaker Pro 5

What is the .fp5 format of FileMaker?

The .fp5 file format was used by FileMaker Pro 5, 5.5 and FileMaker Pro 6, which were manufactured between 1999 and 2004. FileMaker Pro 6, introduced in 2002, was the first to support importing and exporting XML files and restricting or expanding existing search results. All versions of FileMaker Pro mentioned above no longer work on Mac OS X (except Rosetta up to Mac OS X 10.6).

The .fp5 format of FileMaker databases supports only one data table per file. FileMaker Pro 5 through 6 can handle a maximum of 50 open files, which is a maximum of 50 data tables. The maximum file size for FileMaker databases in .fp5 format is 2 GB. Read more >>>


fp7 file format from FileMaker Pro 7 to 11

What is the .fp7 format of FileMaker?

The .fp7 file format is a FileMaker Pro database from FileMaker versions 7 through 11, and FileMaker Pro 7, released in 2004, is a completely new file format that replaced the old .fp5 files. The new .fp7 FileMaker files now support multiple data tables per file and Unicode. While the old .fp5 format could only create file relationships, the new .fp7 format supported relationships between data tables in your own and other files using a graphical relationship graph (Entity Relationship Model).  The maximum file size of databases in the .fp7 format is 8 TB, and a maximum of 2 GB can be stored per field.
