Popup menu

What is a pop-up menu in FileMaker?

FileMaker Inspector: pop-up menuIn FileMaker databases, a pop-up menu is a field formatting feature that opens a pop-up menu with values when the user selects the field. The values can be taken from any value list. Unlike a drop-down list, a drop-down menu does not allow values to be entered manually into a field. However, a function can be activated with which individual values can also be entered.

To add a pop-up menu to a field, switch to Layout mode in FileMaker and click the desired field. In the Inspector (View > Inspector) you can now define all display preferences for the selected field in the area [Field] of the tab [Data]:

  • Display data from: (field to be displayed)
  • Control style (Form in which the field should be displayed. By default, a field is displayed as an edit field. Possible other options: drop-down list, drop-down menu, checkboxes, radio buttons, drop-down calendar)
  • Allow input of other values (Field as pop-up menu in FileMakerThis function adds an additional entry [Miscellaneous…] to the value list. After selecting this entry a dialog for entering individual values appears.)
  • Allow editing of the value list (for static value lists it can be specified whether the user can edit the value list or not. If so, a new item [Edit…] appears in the pop-up menu, which can be used to open a dialog for editing the value list)
