What is a portal in FileMaker?
A section is used in FileMaker to display data records from a reference table. In German-speaking countries, the term Portal is used. A cutout can be placed at any position within a FileMaker layout, with one restriction: cutouts cannot be used within popover windows.
A portal can be set up to display any number of related data records. It is set up in the FileMaker portal settings dialog, which is displayed after double-clicking on the portal.
The following settings can be made for the corresponding section in the section setting dialog:
- Reference data records show from: (reference table from which the linked data records are to be displayed)
- Sort portal data records (optional, sort sequence of the data records within the section)
- Filter portal data records (optional, criteria according to which the data records within the section are to be displayed. Please note: Filtering is based exclusively on visibility. Filtering is not effective for script-controlled access to the section).
- Vertical scroll bar (optional, provides a vertical scroll bar in the section to display more than the set number of data records)
- Reset scroll bar on exit (resets the position of the scroll bar to the beginning after leaving the section)
- Initial line (Line from which the display of data from the reference table should begin)
- Number of lines (number of lines to be displayed in the section)
- Use alternating line status (optional, colors the portal rows alternately in different colors, adjustable in the inspector)
- Use active line status (optional, marks the currently active line in the section)
When creating a section, make sure that the reference table actually matches the current reference. If the desired table does not match the table appearance of the current layout, no data records are displayed in the section.
