What is FileMaker's .fmp12 format?
In spring 2012, FileMaker Pro 12 was released, replacing the old .fp7 format from FileMaker 7 to 11 with the new .fmp12 format. FileMaker Pro 12 contains a completely new layout engine, which is now based on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). This technology makes it possible to change the entire design of a database with a single command. In line with this function, FileMaker provides a total of 40 design themes, some of which are also optimized for use on iOS. In the .fmp12 format, the previous container fields are replaced by container fields, which now also support drag & drop. FileMaker Pro 12 also supports querying FileMaker databases via SQL commands.
WebDirect and custom designs with FileMaker Pro 13
With FileMaker Pro 13 it is possible to customize the design templates based on CSS. Style sheets can be used to change individual elements, which also affects all other objects associated with the style sheet. FileMaker Pro 13 for iOS has swipe gestures and can read barcodes with the integrated camera. With the new popover button, layout elements can be placed in additional windows on existing layouts. FileMaker Pro 13 includes new WebDirect technology for the first time, which allows databases to be executed in the browser.
FileMaker Pro 14 with Script Workspace
Released in 2014, FileMaker Pro 14 now includes a new script workspace that replaces the script editor from previous versions, as well as some new design tools and improvements to the internal HTML5 technology. WebDirect now also supports mobile browsers and Chrome on Android.
Many detailed improvements in FileMaker Pro 15
FileMaker Pro 15 also uses the .fmp12 format introduced with FileMaker 12. The software includes some functional enhancements for mobile devices such as Touch ID and 3D Touch support on iOS devices and the use of iBeacon. The script workspace in FileMaker Pro 15 has also been enhanced with a number of functions. The new version now includes a masked editing field for entering confidential data or passwords.
Conversion of older FileMaker files to the .fmp12 format
FileMaker 12 to 15 can read databases in fp7 format directly and convert them to the current .fmp12 format. It is no longer possible to import older FileMaker files in .fp5 or .fp3 format with these versions. If an older FileMaker file in .fp5 format is to be converted to the current .fmp12 format, the file must first be converted to .fp7 format using FileMaker 7-11.
