The FileMaker platform on which our customizable ERP software gFM-Business, has now been available on the market for more than 30 years. Originally released under the name 'Nutshell', the software was sold quite early on as 'Claris FileMaker Pro' for Apple Macintosh and Windows computers. In the meantime, Claris regularly caused confusion with regard to the naming of the product and the company. A good 10 years ago, the company Claris changed its name to 'FileMaker' and was henceforth known as the product. A few months ago, FileMaker announced that it was changing its name back to Claris, which meant that the product was once again called Claris FileMaker Pro.
Claris platform vs. FileMaker platform
If you have been able to follow the explanations up to this point, things are about to get a little more complicated. Because the company, which is now called Claris again, will in future be offering the FileMaker platform, consisting of FileMaker Pro, FileMaker ServerFileMaker Connect, and FileMaker Cloud will offer another new platform, consisting of Claris Pro, Claris Server, Claris Studio, Claris Connect and Claris Cloud. In principle, these are the same products as those of the FileMaker platform, but the Claris platform no longer uses the (FileMaker) .fmp12 formatbut the new (Claris) .claris format. Existing FileMaker solutions can be converted to the new Claris format, but not back to the FileMaker format from there.
A new product of the Claris platform is Claris Studio. This software makes it possible to create any number of websites, dashboards and web forms that are directly linked to data from the Claris Pro databases. It remains to be seen on what basis user access to these web areas will be licensed.
In order to use the Claris platform, a Claris ID is required, which, according to information from Claris to date, should in principle be available free of charge. Claris has already published a video in German on how to get started with the Claris platform:

Freemium software Claris Pro
As Claris has already officially announced, there will be a free "freemium version" of Claris Pro. According to Claris, anyone will be able to create individual apps based on the Claris platform. In November 2022, Claris launched a registration page where anyone interested can sign up to be notified when the software is released.

The gFM business Merchandise management system for Apple Mac, Windows and iOS has been continuously developed on the basis of the FileMaker platform for almost ten years now. We will continue to publish the software based on the FileMaker platform in the future. If technical conditions permit, we will also publish the gFM-Business ERP software on the basis of the Claris platform in future, so that users can decide whether they want to use the software on the basis of the FileMaker or Claris platform.
